5 Tips For Curly Hair

on

I’ve always struggled with my hair, because it’s extremely curly and crazy and difficult to deal with. But over the years I have picked up a few little useful tips for somewhat dealing with it and I thought that I should share these little nuggets of wisdom with you, and so for you fellow curls out there I hope that this can help you. And if you have any tips for me in return, feel free to leave them in the comments below!

1. Lather Rinse, Don’t Repeat

This is the best bit of advice I’ve ever received about curly hair – shampoo is your enemy. Now I know people might think that you need to shampoo your hair every time that you wash it, but too much can strip away the natural oils and it leaves your hair really dry. I only use shampoo once a week, and it has made the biggest difference to how my hair feels. It’s definitely less frizzy and so much easier to manage.

2. Tangles and No Tears

Hair brushes are also your enemy. Unless you are blessed enough to have just wavy hair, you will know that attempting to brush your hair can be compared to trying to untangle a drawer full of cables while someone repeatedly stabs you in the head. But time a million. The easiest way to brush your hair, if you have to, is to do it while it’s wet and it coated in conditioner and use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush to avoid breakages. I have found that since I stopped brushing my hair every day it is in much better condition and the ends don’t get as dry as they used to.

4. Stay Away From The Heat

Since we’re mentioning the arch enemies of curly hair, heat deserves a mention. Heat transforms curly hair into a fine, frizzy afro of fuzzy frizzy crap – scientific term. It also dries out your hair a lot. Curly hair is usually very dry and gets affected by humidity very easily. If you’re one of those people who can’t live without a straightener then I would recommend trying to use it as little as possible. Try to limit your use of a hairdryer, and if you do use it, use a diffuser to help define your curls instead of blowing them out. Try and stay away from the heat!

5. Be Gentle!

Don’t drag a comb through your hair, or scrape it back – try to be gentle. Hair is quite a delicate thing and brushing or treating it too roughly can damage it in the long term. It’s recommended that you dry your hair with a t-shirt instead to try not to create too much frizz, and also avoid rubbing your hair too much. Don’t forget to use products like leave in conditioner, hair oils and hair serums, because they will help your hair to retain moisture and help protect against split ends and damage.

i also use shampoo once every week. and i use to use a blow dryer but then i got lazy . and it was the best way laziness could have affected me . I naturally let it dry by putting into little braids while its wet and that gives me the best result. Also i don’t dry it with my towel anymore because i learned it wan’t the best for curly hair . and as You mention heat is the enemy because i had front row seat to witness it . It damaged my hair severely and now i’m trying to heal it again. Thanks for sharing your tips . they are very helpful.

I have curly hair and it’s been the bane of my life since I was a teenager. I have to confess that I’m not a lover of mine and have failed to embrace it, choosing to straighten it to within an inch of it’s life and as you said, straightening makes it very coarse and fine. I’m now attempting to re-connect with my hair and begin a new love affair. Curly hair is beautiful! I tried ‘Plopping’ this weekend! Have you tried it? xx

I’ve also only recently begun to embrace having curly hair, I used to scrape it back into a bun every day! I’m so glad that you’re growing to love yours 🙂 I’ve never heard of plopping before! What is it? Xx
