Chocolate and wine – are there any two better things in the world? Waterford Wine Estate in Stellenbosch offers a pairing of the two, and with chocolate and wine you can’t really go wrong.
A friend of mine had a voucher for the chocolate and wine tasting, and asked me to go with her (this took a lot of persuasion, as you can imagine), and so on a beautiful Saturday morning we took a drive out to the wine farm to make good use of those vouchers. The drive up to Waterford is one of the many that always makes me realise how incredibly lucky I am to live in such a beautiful part of the world.
The estate used to be a citrus farm, before being converted into a wine estate by two families, who have created a stunning cellar door and tasting area. Waterford has a nice selection of unique wine tastings – not just your simple wine tastings. Apart from your standard tasting, you also have the chocolate and wine, reserved vintage tastings and even a drive around the estate, with a tutored wine tasting in the vineyards.
We opted to share a standard tasting to taste a range of the wines, and then finished with the chocolate and wine tasting. We got a nice mixture of the lifestyle range Pecan Stream, the Waterford Estate wines and the Kevin Arnold range. One of the wine advisors, who recognised us from Brampton even got us a sneaky taste of an old vintage Shiraz – the newer vintage of which is included in the chocolate tasting.
The Chocolate and Wine tasting has three wines, the Kevin Arnold Shiraz, the Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the Waterford Family Reserve Heatherleigh dessert wine. These are paired with some beautiful chocolates that are designed and created to pair with these specific wines by chocolatier Richard von Geusau. It’s a really lovely tasting, and the chocolates go really well with the wines: my particular favourite is the sea salt dark chocolate!
Luckily we had a beautiful day, and so we could sit outside in the courtyard – and the estate looked particularly beautiful that day. If you’re taking a trip through the Stellenbosch wine route, I would definitely stop off here for some wine – beautiful wine in a beautiful setting, you can’t really go wrong.
